We all love the New Year! January is a great time to start things off fresh. At Puratae, we know fresh ideas, fresh new looks, a fresh mindset, and fresh goals are on everyone’s mind. Starting the year off feeling fresh is important, but how do we balance all of this as we move through the first few months of 2021? 

Oftentimes it’s what’s in our mind that drives the level of success we achieve in life, but when it comes to balance, our gut is the mind that needs fueling. Yes! Your tummy needs lovin’ too!

The gut relies on the same types of neurons and neurotransmitters as the brain; that’s why it’s often referred to as the second brain or the gut-brain connection. So if you’re looking for balance this year, your best bet is to take a look at what you’re consuming.  

Start Small

Going into the new year with so many exciting new ideas can sometimes be overwhelming. January seems like a breeze with all of the checkmarks on your calendar, but all too often we fail to achieve our goals because we start off with too much on our plate! We believe that “by small and simple things, great things are brought to pass.” It’s the “small and simple” things we do every day that make the big difference in the long-run.  

So we’re breaking it down for you. Here are 5 simple ways you can add balance to your body + your life this year:

  1. DRINK YOUR WATER

You can calculate this by taking your total body weight (lbs) and dividing it in half. This will be your minimum daily water intake (oz).  Increase that amount for exercise and activity.  And remember, pregnant and nursing mamas need more to stay hydrated for you and your baby.   

  1. GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP

Adults need 7-9 hours per night, and kids/teens need 9-14 hours depending on age (younger = more sleep). Turn the screens off early and catch some well-deserved zzz’s.

  1. 30+ MINS OF EXERCISE 

Physical exercise helps the body fight off infection, flushes out bacteria from the lungs and airways, and can reduce your chance of getting a cold or the flu. Whether it’s going for a walk, doing some yoga, or going to the gym – do your best to take at least 30 minutes a day to raise your heart rate.
